Unreal single player maps are fun to make, for the simple reason that it allows the level designer to go all out with their designs, while still challenging them to stay focused on the theme of their map, to be able to accurately judge difficulty and combat, and to test their ability to create a storyline in their level that unfolds while the player explores it. While multiplayer maps are certainly more common and easier to make, the true test of a level designers ability is the creation of a successful single player map. Many level designers are scared off by this challenge, sometimes because they feel that spending weeks - even months - on one map is too daunting or that no one would appreciate a single player map, but the feelings of success that are attained by finishing a single player map are certainly worth the labor that one expends in its creation.

UnrealQuake Mission Pack
UnrealQuake is a mission pack that I started working
on quite some time ago and never got around to finishing (although I work on
it occasionally). It takes place in the world of Quake, while using Unreal items,
weapons, and enemies. The architecture and level design is inspired directly
by Quake, so the bases in this resemble their Quake counterparts. While this
is not the most original of games, it provides some amusement, if not for just
remembering when you first played Quake. It's full of scripted events, and has
a lot of interaction with the levels, much like in the original Quake. You must
have a custom UnrealScript .u file to play this gametype since I included the
Quake keys, a custom sound file since the Quake sounds are in the levels, and
a custom texture file since only the Quake textures are used to texture the
levels. I cannot make this available for release since it uses copyrighted media,
but I can provide screenshots and readme files for it. When and if iD Software
decides to allow free-distribution of their media for Quake 1, then I will upload
the maps and packs for sounds/code/textures, and link you to them.
